I have doing genealogy off and on for the past 50 years. Since I started watching genealogy tv (since may 2024), I have upped my game in genealogy. The most important tips that I have learned and implemented is the research notes and easy breezy source citation.

I have a Revolutionary War relative (Walter Burnside) who served in North Carolina. He served out of Orange County and was captured at the Battle of Hillsborough and confined on a prisoner ship (we believe it was the Eske) for 11 months and 12 days. I was trying to see if I can find some information on his confinement and located a record but can’t find it anywhere online. Do you know where I might be able to find NARA M247 Roll 175 (US POW’s from 1781 on ship in Charleston Harbor)? I’m hoping it will give us a clue of his birth or heritage (Scottish or Irish). Brick wall. Orphaned german speaking born 1756 in Surry county/stokes NC. Named Eaton because he liked to eat… but real name possibly Valentine, or Van Etten… lots of Revolutionary War affidavits wanting his pension. They didn’t have his name down right on the muster calls (or he didn’t know what name they had him down for) even though he served 4 years. He was bound to Gray Bynum. Had a brother John Valentine who had the family Bible. He ran away to join the war. He married families who gave the affidavits. Owned part of Suaratown 1/2 our ancestors are English 1/2 German moravians, lutherans How do we find his real name and his parents?

I have a number of ancestors who lived in North Carolina for a generation or so on their way to other places. Families such as the Masters, Irwins, Phifers, Skinners, and the Berrymans. My Masters ancestor came to North Carolina from Western Maryland with the Moravians to establish the first English Moravian settlement called Hope in Wachovia present-day Winston-Salem. He left the group to fight in the Revolutionary War.

Almost every branch of my convoluted tree came to Kentucky, then to points north and west, from Tennessee via North Carolina or Virginia. Most from Caswell or Yadkin County, NC. Phelps, Randolph, Dye, Butt, Bastin, Falconberry, Black, Hixson/Hickson/Hixon, Durham, Carman, Buis, Richardson, King, Hogue, Perkins, Hatter, Mullican, Rayborn, Wheeler, Anderson, Elliott, Johnson, Newell, Quinton, Blackstone, Patton, Adams, Cook, and Routsaw. Many of these early Kentucky settlers intermarried and descendants still live near each other. So, my mother's parents were double sixth cousins. Nearly everyone in our part of Casey County is related to each other, at least one way, if not more!

This is a tip for those with Slavic decent. The furthest records go back, are the 1800s and 1700s if you're lucky. The reason being happens to be where we Slavs truly come from. I took the ancestry DNA test looking for viking and found none. Then I followed this rumor told by our dark age nobles and found these busts that the Romans have 3000 years ago and my family look like twins and my last name means the eyebrow bridge of the Sarmatians. We Eastern Europeans are decended from the Sarmatian knights and the Amazon women. We were with our horse herds for 5000 years. When your family finally shows up on a church registry, that is when your herd finally came in to migrate amongst the farming villages. The only thing that goes further back is the coat of arms. My family coat of arms was won in 1400, battling the Tartars. Then my family was with the Polish Hussars cavalry from then on. When my family would retire, each generation were barrel makers they learned with the Hussars. The barrels they made they sold at the port in Gdansk shipping yard all those centuries. To find your coat of arms, look for the closet clan name to your last name, then look at the list of names until you find yours. How we Slavs received our names was different than from the west. You had to earn your family name in battle. If you were too young to go into battle, then when the warriors returned, you would be given a new family name that they would hold until they earned that name in battle. This way went back the entire 5000 years. When the Amazons finally got tired of dealing with the Romans, they took the tribe and horse herds north to their only ally the Slavs. We are 50/50 Sarmatian/Slavic.

My family are the Walston’s from Tarboro & Northampton, Va. My ancestors surnames were Battle, King, and Grant, They were Angolan indentured servants for John Jay (the 18th century French Huguenot lawyer) and who also helped build Princeville and have early American roots in Mexico City, Maryland, Delaware South Carolina and NY. Our paternal African lineage is from Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo and Burkina Faso. If you have more information please lmk. Thanks a lot -T Walston

Another reason to not delete a detached branch is that you might find that it connects to your tree a few generations earlier and you would have to do all that work filling it back in. But I always leave a web link (on Ancestry) where it was attached so I can easily find it again.

I have ancestors from Rowan and Iredell Counties. They were Theophilus and Mary Simonton (from Pennsylvania) and son, Adam Simonton. He and wife Sarah Sale/ Sales went to Ohio from North Carolina.

Thank you so much. I watched the original and have been doing as you said and found some deed records that are able to prove my hypothesis that my husband’s great grandfather b. 1826 and his brother were raised by their grandmother. I suspected so because his y-DNA matches several cousins descended from his two sons, but don’t match the descendants of the man thought to be his father. Now I just need to make floating trees of his three DNA matches and see if I can find a mutual ancestor. 😊

Thank you for mentioning this new site but wow, a huge CAUTION is needed here!!! First off this version of OCR has been SO SO wrong, many times I can't tell it is even reading the same page I am. Second they are missing tons. I have a guy who was a Justice of the Peace. His name does not show even once in that state! It shows only 4 times in another but the one heading claims California. Cemetery Records 1965, mentions 2 towns not in California. What do I see when I scroll back in the book they are showing? MARRIAGE records for a county in INDIANA during a 22 year period. Say WHAT? Also their + when searching does not seem to show items with BOTH terms but with EITHER term. Which is hugely not helpful. I don't need my results to go from 300 to 7000 when ADDING another word to NARROW down the finds! And lastly the categories under type make no sense. I have seen choices of legal, government, vital, miscellaneous, reference, genealogy, uncategorized etc etc. Surely many records could be put in more than one of those! Hiding under each heading are many more thing lumped oddly. Government contains town, orphan, widow, nobility, family register.....medical has hospital, miscarriage and patient. Uncategorized has 6 categories,,,

Seemingly, my ancestors were completely driven out of Dumfries & Galloway Scotland forced to Ulster. My border reiver surname seems to no longer exists in Scotland, which is sad. Plenty of Crocketts in Ulster to this day it seems. My 4 times GGF was born in Old Tryon Co. NC in 1783. Then Dead End...

I finally traced my 3rd great grandparents (he was French Canadian, she was from Old Mainer stock) through Michigan with FamilySearch's AI transcribed records! All of the old county histories for this family were off, but the deeds were on the money! I still don't have a death record, obituary or will for him, but once I knew where he was, the county newspaper had two notices for probate events, so at least I know that he had died before the earliest probate notice.

My family is from NC...iv gotten back to my 14th great grandfather on my father's side!

Connie, my eighth generation grandfather was Thomas Bull, Sr., married to Susannah (possibly Harwell). One of his grandsons was Ambrose Bull, married to Elizabeth Johnson. Ambrose and Elizabeth, along with their children, lived in Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. Our brick wall is trying to locate where in England that Thomas immigrated from (possibly Wilshire) and what ship he sailed upon to arrive at the colonies in 1721. His immigration year was documented in the court records when he and others were mandated to repledge his allegiance to the king. How do we look for ship records? Knowing from those records could provide a clue to his hometown. I've been researching since the late 60s and early 70s.

I print a calendar every year from family tree maker with names, birthdays, anniversary dates. Under publish, collection, types, other is calendar report. You can select individuals, do just immediate family or extended family. Just haven't found a way to add photos
